Corduroy

Alright corduroy. Let's talk. What exactly are you?
Corduroy: Corduroy is a textile composed of twisted fibers that, when woven, lie parallel (similar to twill) to one another to form the cloth's distinct pattern, a "cord." Modern corduroy is most commonly composed of tufted cords, sometimes exhibiting a channel (bare to the base fabric) between the tufts. The word "corduroy" can be used as a noun, a transitive verb, or an adjective. Corduroy is, in essence, a ridged form of velvet.
Thanks Wikipedia.

It confuses me. It’s getting colder, so it’s time to break the cords out, right? Gap is promoting their corduroy like crazy right now and I’m tempted to drop in and snatch some, but it just confuses me. What do I wear with corduroy, and in what color? Color is an entirely different story because it usually come in a random brown that’s difficult to pair with anything that isn’t a “fall” color.

Let me clarify, I love Fall, but I’m not sure I love the corduroy.

I’ve never found a pair of corduroy pants that is flattering on me, and I’m not sure if I’m willing to take the time and energy to find out. Does anyone just hands down love corduroy? I personally think pants, skirts and jackets are the only items that should be corduroy, but please, if you can prove me wrong with an item that is cute and corduroy and not pants, jeans or skirts, be my guest.

I like these I think? $54.50

Also, does anyone have a color preference? What do you wear with it? I imagine that if I wore corduroy I'd pair a dark colored pair with a maroon or navy long sleeve shirt or a light sweater and a fun scarf.

But I mean what about this brown color? See what I mean? what do you pair with that? Does anyone else think these are less flattering? I'm not digging those boots with them either...

So all in all, I guess cords aren't that confusing...but rather, its just difficult to find a flattering pair. I think I just added a pair to my shopping list.

Oh Fall, how I love you...

Happy Hump Day!

I wear cords like I wear my khackis (ie-with everything!). Mostly sweaters or buttondowns, I guess. They are definitely a fall staple, especially if you buy them in a classic color like navy, gray or tan. Red cords are MUCH harder to wear (still cute for the appropriate occasion though)!

And, IMO, you should only wear them in a skirt, pants or jacket. No cordoroy big shirts please. Not flattering. Nor should a dress be made of the material. Too thick and bunchy!

Have a great day, Freck, and get thyself to a gap asap!

I looove cords. I wear them all the time in the winter. I have a bunch of different colors and I wear them with whatever is complementary. My fav cords are the gray color and I wear them with a lot of winter whites, blues, and blacks. I'm sure some brighter colors would work fine though. As for the traditional browns, I agree with AEOT....I normally pair them with whatever I would pair with khakis.

I love corduroy. I have yet to find a pair of flattering pair of Corduroy pants though. I do have a purple corduroy blazer that I think looks smart though.

I'll just say it--I hate corduroy. Most of what I see is very unflattering, as you mentioned, and it tends to look cheap. I have a light blue corduroy shirt from late 90s J.Crew that I wear to kick around the house, but I would not wear it out.

Plus, all those earth colors just look way more 'blah' when rendered in cords.

I have 3 pairs of match stick skinny cords from j crew and I loooove them. I have them in black, grey, and a dark tan..I mostly just wear them when I teach but I like to pair them with bright cardigans or cute tops. Try the j crew ones!

I love cords, but I do think having the right fit is imperative (as it is with most clothing). Anyway, I love J. Crew's cords - I can't remember exactly what style they are but it is some bootcut. Anyway, I have a deep brown and a bright red (I like color). I also kind of wear them as I do khakis too. I like them with sweaters and boots :) Let us know if you get any!
